Fire Safety Tips - Smoke Alarms Theme of Fire Prevention Week

Fires, as we know, can be devastating for families and business owners. The NFPA reported that there were 370,000 home structure fires in the U.S. in 2011, resulting in 13,910 civilian injuries, 2,520 civilian deaths, and $6.9 billion in direct damage.smoke alarms tulsa
In honor of this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which runs October 5 through October 11, we’ve put together some fire safety tips to remind residents and business owners of what they can do to stay safe.

The theme of the Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the NFPA, is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month.” The importance of having working smoke alarms, and testing them monthly, cannot be understated. According to the NFPA, 3 out of every 5 home fire deaths happened in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home, including the basement, as well as inside each bedroom and outside each sleeping area, the NFPA noted. Test all of the alarms every month by pressing the test button to ensure it’s working properly. Replace the batteries in every smoke alarm, whether hardwired or battery-operated, at least once a year, or when the alarm starts to make a chirping sound indicating a low battery. Smoke alarms over 10 years old should be replaced. It’s best to use smoke alarms that are both ionization and photoelectric alarms to ensure you have the earliest warning.

As the weather begins to get cooler this fall, it’s also important to take precautions with heating devices in the home or office. It’s recommended that indoor heating units be professionally cleaned and inspected every year.

“During the summer you get a lot of dust, a lot of things can actually get inside the heating unit. So when you go to turn it on for heat, it can actually ignite,” one firefighter noted.fire alarm inspections tulsa
Remember to keep everything that can burn at least 3 feet away from any type of heating device in the home or office.
